We are now settling in to the New Year and have the first full week behind us. You may be wondering what I mean by my prediction that it’s going to be a SMART year? I promise you that I don’t have inside information and I don’t have a crystal ball. What I can assure you is that I know that this is the time when everyone is excited about the freshness and promise of a new year.
A fresh calendar gives us the opportunity to wipe the slate clean from the shortcomings of the prior year and to focus on obtaining the life that we truly desire. Some of us are feeling our waistbands a little tighter from all of the holiday imbibing. Now is the time when we vow to lose those 20 lbs. or to go to the gym every day. For others the focus is to find the love of their life or to move into a new home. It’s the time when we make contracts with ourselves only to find that by February 1 we are already in breach because we couldn’t hold out any longer and dug into a box of Krispy Kreme donuts.
If this sounds familiar, ask yourself if you’re willing to let another year pass by without fulfilling your goals? How many times have you made these vows? How many times have you tried so hard only to find yourself breaking your promise?
Most of us make a statement that sounds like a goal. This simple declaration without a concrete plan behind it stands a great probability of failing. Would you get in your car for a cross country trip without a map or GPS to guide you along? Yet most of us go about accomplishing our goals in an ad hoc fashion. We just throw spaghetti on the wall hoping that our plan will stick.
2015 can be your best year yet if you are SMART about setting your goals. What I mean is that in order for your goals to have a chance of being achieved they must be SMART.
S – Specific (what do you want to do and why?)
M – Measurable (how will you know when this is accomplished?)
A – Attainable (is the goal feasible and is it within my control?)
R – Recorded and Relevant (is this goal written down and does it make sense for my life or business now?
T – Time-bound (have you set a deadline for its accomplishment?)
As you’re going through the process of aligning yourself with your vision consider whether what you’re seeking is truly your heart’s desire. Being honest is the greatest gift that we can give ourselves as we create the life of our choosing. Being SMART is the greatest thing we can do to assure that we attain it.
Please share your goals for 2015 and how you’re going to achieve them. You may post below.
